GEORGE GAMOW Author of the original Mr. Tompkins series
|
George Gamow's breadth of knowledge was astounding. He did groundbreaking work on radioactivity, originated the Big Bang theory of the Universe and help decipher the genetic code. These major contributions in cosmology and molecular biology made him one of the twentieth century' s greatest scientists.
As an author, Gamow is regarded as one of the greatest science popularisers of all time. He wrote books on how the atom works; radioactivity; electromagnetism; the nature of light; and how scientists understand space, time, and motion. His classic series, “The Adventures of Mr. Tompkins” has been translated into over 20 languages and was awarded the Kalinga Prize by UNESCO—the only international award given for science popularization. |
Igor Gamow is the son of the late George Gamow. For 37 years Igor was a professor of engineering in the Dept. of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Professor Gamow's research has lead to a series of bioengineering inventions such as the Gamow Bag, a device that treats high altitude mountain sickness. His great passion in science involved what has been called bionics or the science of living machines. Animals and plants have evolved stunning engineering devices such as spring loaded legs in horses and antelopes, super strong fibers from spiders, incredible glues found in sea barnacles, the super swimming abilities of dolphins and whales and of course the magical ability of flight developed by a variety of birds and insects. By understanding how these various devices function engineers can build better machines.
